The Rodriguez family have called Tempe, AZ their home for many years now, the kids have grown up here and the parents have created and nurtured many long lasting friendships. It was an honor to work photograph them and a special thanks for allowing me to have their session recording on video and being interviewed for my upcoming video.

The Color Run was held at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, 28 January 2012.  The main question was “Are you ready for the craziest, colorful, 5k of your life?”

The Color Run is a one of a kind experience that is less about speed and more about enjoying a color crazy day with your friends and family. The Color Run pretty much has 2 SIMPLE rules. 1. White shirts (any mostly white T will work great) mandatory at the start line and 2. Color plastered EVERYTHING at the finish!  Runner/walkers begin the 5k at the start line like a brand new pristine coloring book, they end looking like they fell into a Willy Wonka… tye died… vat of colored goodness.

For the Santos family, Kiwanis Park in Tempe is home. They grew up across the street and spent many days, nights and weekends playing here. With 125 acres, it’s one of the largest in the state with plenty of activities for a family, from a stocked lake for fishing to batting cages, wave pool, tennis courts and more. So it’s easy to see how it quickly became a favorite for this family and I can relate since it’s where I spent most of my childhood as well!

Mary is a class of 2012 senior at Williams Field High School in Gilbert, AZ. If you were to describe Mary is two words they would be enigma and ambitious.  Her lucky number is 8, her favorite color is red and her favorite brand is PINK by Victoria Secrets. You can always talk her into watching any of these movies, A walk to remember, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Friends with Benefits and the following TV shows, Modern family, The Bachelor, Glee, Vampire Diaries and South Park. One website you can find more of Mary’s loves is at Pintrest. Her 2 dogs, Zookie and Vino keep her company while enjoying many of her favorite hobbies like, playing the violin, reading, participating in student council, community service, hanging out with friends and family or going to the gym.

Much like many of you I close out the year reflecting on good and the bad that’s happened to me both personally and professionally. I have much to be thankful for and I can learn a tremendous amount from the bad and cherish the positive.

Mary

My daughter, Mary is a dynamic, fun, smart and beautiful girl but hates having her picture taken. Plus she’s an athlete so when I often do get a picture of her she’s squatting behind home plate in catchers gear, sweating and running up a basketball court or making some silly face.  So it was a great day to get her all dolled up and take her to one of my photo sessions.  This image is by far my favorite of ours and now hangs in my living room to relive the time.

What an honor to be hired as the Official Photographer for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. An honor that I get to repeat in 2012. Photographing sports for me is a blast, I’m already a fan of many sports and now I get behind the ropes access and get paid!?….somebody pinch me.

Dame en Rouge – Magazine Photo Session

Like sports where it’s all about capturing that split second action, portraits of people are very similar. I’m trying to capture a persons essence in one moment and share their story with all of you. I have a strong opinion that images should not be stored on a DVD in some desk drawer or stuck in a computer. They should be displayed with grandeur in your home, office or another meaningful place.

Quemado, NM

I drive a lot around the southwest (almost 40,000 miles this year) and finding these abandoned vehicles in my travels is like a having a scavenger hunt behind the windshield. My collection is still growing and I’m excited to someday publish these in a coffee table book.

It doesn’t happen much these days and it’s great to see a couple, my parents, still in love after all these years.

Bicycles and Cameras come together once again

I’ve been racing bicycles on and off since I was a kid, starting with BMX then moving onto mountain, road and other disciplines.  Cycling will always remain a passion of mine and while I’ve been hired and love to photograph the AMGEN Tour of California and the Larry H Miller Tour of Utah, this is the first time I’ve photographed a young man racing BMX for his senior portraits and I certainly hope it’s not the last.

Summer Nights in Sedona, Arizona

I’m often asked, “How do you take photographs in the middle of summer in Phoenix?”…..simple, you either go into a nice cool studio, wake up super early or you get out-of-town. Trust me the later is so much more fun This couple hired me to take their engagement portraits but wanted something a little more unique and personal to them so we picked a location unique to them and made a night of it.

There is no halftime for cheerleaders!

School is getting back in and cheerleaders have already been practicing during the summer.  I work with the cheer squad at my school, Marcos de Niza because it’s a great feeling to be at a game where there is so much energy because everyone is cheering for your team to win.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

It’s not if but when cancer will enter your life. To the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of a walk; it describes the progress we’re making together to save lives and end breast cancer.  I volunteer to photograph events like the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Climb to Conquer Cancer because it’s a joy to see family, friends and strangers come together to help and save others.

A 5k anyway she can

In the month were we give thanks, Dorothy can teach us all a lot about just that. Here’s a woman in her 80′s still competing in 5k runs and other events and she’ll be damned if she lets a walker slow her down. You should see the joy in her face and she exclaims how she won’t give up and that during this year’s race she set her personal best!

Holiday Blessings

This year I had some crappy things happen but I was blessed with many great moments too. One in particular was taking the family up to Flagstaff, AZ to play in the snow and for the first time ever to cut my own Christmas tree and thus starting a new tradition with my daughter, my girlfriend and her children.  This is one reason I love photography, I don’t need this image to remember this great time, I need it for my family to relive these great moments in our lives.

I hope that your year was just as good as mine and I’m already looking forward to what 2012 will bring!

People have grown to accept that an 8×10 is the standard size for an image but I encourage you to think larger when selecting images for your portraits.  Take the example below (Click image to view larger) on the left is the “standard” 8×10, to the right is a 30×40″ portrait of a family. Both of these images will draw you in closer but which one do you think has a greater impact to family and friends when they walk into your home or office?
