Much like many of you I close out the year reflecting on good and the bad that’s happened to me both personally and professionally. I have much to be thankful for and I can learn a tremendous amount from the bad and cherish the positive.

January

My daughter, Mary is a dynamic, fun, smart and beautiful girl but hates having her picture taken. Plus she’s an athlete so when I often do get a picture of her she’s squatting behind home plate in catchers gear, sweating and running up a basketball court or making some silly face.  So it was a great day to get her all dolled up and take her to one of my photo sessions.  This image is by far my favorite of ours and now hangs in my living room to relive the time.

February

What an honor to be hired as the Official Photographer for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. An honor that I get to repeat in 2012. Photographing sports for me is a blast, I’m already a fan of many sports and now I get behind the ropes access and get paid!?….somebody pinch me.

March

Like sports where it’s all about capturing that split second action, portraits of people are very similar. I’m trying to capture a persons essence in one moment and share their story with all of you. I have a strong opinion that images should not be stored on a DVD in some desk drawer or stuck in a computer. They should be displayed with grandeur in your home, office or another meaningful place.

April

I drive a lot around the southwest (almost 40,000 miles this year) and finding these abandoned vehicles in my travels is like a having a scavenger hunt behind the windshield. My collection is still growing and I’m excited to someday publish these in a coffee table book.

May

It doesn’t happen much these days and it’s great to see a couple, my parents, still in love after all these years.

June

I’ve been racing bicycles on and off since I was a kid, starting with BMX then moving onto mountain, road and other disciplines.  Cycling will always remain a passion of mine and while I’ve been hired and love to photograph the AMGEN Tour of California and the Larry H Miller Tour of Utah, this is the first time I’ve photographed a young man racing BMX for his senior portraits and I certainly hope it’s not the last.

I’m often asked, “How do you take photographs in the middle of summer in Phoenix?”…..simple, you either go into a nice cool studio, wake up super early or you get out-of-town. Trust me the later is so much more fun This couple hired me to take their engagement portraits but wanted something a little more unique and personal to them so we picked a location unique to them and made a night of it.

Taking family portraits is a great way to remind myself that other family’s are just as silly as mine

September

School is getting back in and cheerleaders have already been practicing during the summer.  I work with the cheer squad at my school, Marcos de Niza because it’s a great feeling to be at a game where there is so much energy because everyone is cheering for your team to win.

It’s not if but when cancer will enter your life. To the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of a walk; it describes the progress we’re making together to save lives and end breast cancer.  I volunteer to photograph events like the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Climb to Conquer Cancer because it’s a joy to see family, friends and strangers come together to help and save others.

November

In the month were we give thanks, Dorothy can teach us all a lot about just that. Here’s a woman in her 80′s still competing in 5k runs and other events and she’ll be damned if she lets a walker slow her down. You should see the joy in her face and she exclaims how she won’t give up and that during this year’s race she set her personal best!

December

This year I had some crappy things happen but I was blessed with many great moments too. One in particular was taking the family up to Flagstaff, AZ to play in the snow and for the first time ever to cut my own Christmas tree and thus starting a new tradition with my daughter, my girlfriend and her children.  This is one reason I love photography, I don’t need this image to remember this great time, I need it for my family to relive these great moments in our lives.

I hope that your year was just as good as mine and I’m already looking forward to what 2012 will bring!
